On 13 September 2025, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig opened its doors to the public under the motto “A Quantum Leap into PTB.” More than 8,000 visitors from all over Germany took part in this unique event. With hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, and direct encounters with researchers, the Open Day became a joyful and unforgettable celebration of science.
The energy and enthusiasm of the participants showed just how much curiosity and excitement there is for the future of quantum technologies.
Quantum Valley Lower Saxony (QVLS) and its partners hosted three of the eight quantum stations at the PTB Open Day: Q1: Precision Meets Quantum Technology (QUEST), Q2: Quantum Technologies Enter Everyday Life (QTZ), and Q3: Quantum Escape Room: Save the Time! (QTZ).
At these stations visitors got hands-on insights into the world of quantum technologies, discovering how researchers measure time with light, trap single ions, and explore the principles of quantum computing. They also learned how these advances are applied in practice, from building secure communication systems to developing the core components of future quantum computers. The experience was rounded off with an interactive challenge, where participants raced against the clock to fix a malfunctioning atomic clock, using teamwork, problem-solving, and a touch of quantum intuition.

The PTB Open Day 2025 highlighted the importance of making research accessible and tangible for the public, showing that quantum science is not only a field of groundbreaking discoveries but also a driver of future innovation. For QVLS, the event was an excellent opportunity to share its vision of a strong quantum ecosystem in Lower Saxony — and to inspire the next generation of curious minds.
